DID YOU KNOW
The tides are changing in Nova Scotia’s energy system and the Smart Energy marketplace will be an area to watch. With the recent announcements introducing a provincial cap-and-trade system, a new equivalency agreement to reflect the accelerated coal phase-out at the federal level and the Pan-Canadian Framework on Climate Change and Clean Growth, the framework in which Smart Energy Communities are set could be radically changed.

Communities account for 58% of energy use and 54% of all GHG emissions in Atlantic Canada. In order for Nova Scotia to meet its GHG and energy objectives, continued coordinated action at the municipal level is essential and will be directly advanced by the MELG.

OBJECTIVES IN 2018
  • Identification of gaps where knowledge sharing can help municipalities reduce their energy use and GHG emissions
  • Peer-to-peer knowledge transfer and best practice sessions, led by a facilitator
  • Development of a Community Energy Planning Primer for NS
  • Share the findings of the MELG with interested municipalities
