Call for Papers - We thank everyone who made a submission. The Call for Papers is now closed.

Since 2007, QUEST - Quality Urban Energy Systems of Tomorrow - has served as Canada's national voice for Integrated Community Energy Systems and Solutions (ICES). ICES considers how energy is supplied and consumed in all sectors including transportation, land-use planning, industry, water and waste management and others. Join us for our inaugural International Conference and Tradeshow from November 18-21, 2012 at the Fairmont, Winnipeg.

The International Conference and Tradeshow will attract over 300 delegates from across the country and internationally and provide the ICES industry with a convenient, affordable way to get the latest industry information, tools and policy updates.

The focus for 2012 is Smart Energy Communities in Cold Climates. Around the world, urban, small, rural, and remote communities comprise 50% of all energy use and related emissions. A significant portion of this energy is used to meet the heating and plug load needs for all buildings and for the transportation of people and goods. Many communities around the world are accelerating their sustainability strategies by integrating the energy activities associated with buildings, the supply and treatment of water, transportation and goods movement, the management of waste and energy infrastructure. These strategies are complemented by alternative financing, adaptation and resiliency, job creation and innovation.

ICES are all about investing in the establishment of Smart Energy Communities by wisely planning for and using energy. Making ICES happen is also about implementation and addressing the economic constrains and advancing the solutions that enable greater market uptake of practical solutions, policies and processes. We'll bring together the best thinkers, strategists, practitioners and decision-makers from Canada and abroad to share what we can do to make Smart Energy Communities in Cold Climates a reality.

Abstracts for papers and/or posters need to relate to the focus identified above and must address one or more of the following topics:

  1. Building Smart Energy Communities
Sustainable energy use and delivery in cold climates: Best examples of partnerships, strategies and policies; community innovation, engagement and investments models; sustainable community planning and design.
  2. Innovative and Integrated use of Fuels, Technologies and Services for Meeting Heating Needs
Moving beyond traditional approaches for heating: innovations in the sustainable delivery of heating services (green heat); leveraging district energy, water and waste systems, renewable and lower carbon energy choices; servicing small, remote and rural communities; building resilient, flexible, dynamic and adaptable systems to meet fluctuating energy demand.
  3. Measuring, Modelling, Visualizing and Benchmarking ICES Projects
Identifying common approaches: improved methodologies; advances in computational models or other designs; visualization for energy decision making; novel methods of management, organization or quality assurance; benchmarking and evaluating performance of sustainable energy and urban systems.
  4. Mobility and Sustainable Communities
Moving more efficiently: lower carbon approaches to urban, freight and marine transportation; information describing key strategies and approaches, high-performing transportation design, and the business case for new and innovative transportation fuels and technologies.
  5. Growing the ICES Industry and Market Transformation
ICES Markets, Technologies, Products, Jobs and Trade: leading products and technologies (focus on Canada); new market research for training and job creation; trade opportunities, strategies and solutions; bridging barriers in the short term and driving regulatory change for longer term solutions; economic development policies and programs.

Accepted papers will be presented during the conference, November 18-21st, 2012, at the Fairmont Winnipeg, Winnipeg, Manitoba. They will also be published in conference proceedings and available on the QUEST Canada website.
