QUEST Business Cases Overview

QUEST has engaged five of Canada's top business schools to produce QUEST's first Business Case Series featuring Integrated Community Energy Systems and initiatives in British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, Québec and Nova Scotia. The Business Case Series is designed to bring forward the key factors contributing to successful ICES project implementation.

SouthEast False Creek Neighbourhood Energy Utility

This case study details and examines the development of the Southeast False Creek Neighbourhood Energy Utility in Vancouver, British Columbia with special attention paid to its project financing, ownership and governance structure. Strategies and best practices that contributed to the Neighbourhood Energy Utility's success have been identified along with key lessons learned that can be applied to future projects in order to aid municipalities, real estate developers and communities in the successful implementation of Integrated Community Energy Systems.

Alderney 5 Energy Project

This case study details and examines the development of the Alderney 5 Energy Project in Halifax, Nova Scotia with special attention paid to the new technology including key project components, project financing and an unexpected ownership and operating model. A detailed assessment of the stakeholder engagement process, environmental assessment, ease of replication and risk management are included.

Strathcona County Community Energy System

This case study highlights the key technical, economic, financial and governance factors significant to the development of the Strathcona County Community Energy System in Sherwood Park, Strathcona County, Alberta. Strathcona County's experience developing this Integrated Community Energy Solution (ICES) project will facilitate and reduce costs for future business plan development and ICES project implementation.

Biogas for Fine Paper: A Cascade, Gaz Métro and Waste Management Project

The objective of this case study is to generate transferrable lessons and knowledge from the key technical, economic, financial and governance factors and decisions that led to the installation of a biogas collection system in the Ste-Sophie landfill, near Montréal, Québec to supply energy to a fine paper mill, via a dedicated 13km pipeline. The study highlights the project's features and successful implementation strategies, to help avoid pitfalls for future ICES projects in other communities in Canada.
