QUEST – Quality Urban Energy Systems of Tomorrow – is seeking a full-time Director, Projects and Advisory Services.

QUEST is the voice for the Smart Energy Communities marketplace. Smart Energy Communities improve energy efficiency, enhance reliability, cut costs, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Position Overview
Putting QUEST’s funders, volunteers, clients, Subscribers and partners at the centre of everything we do, it is the role of the Director, Projects and Advisory Services to develop and respond to project opportunities to grow and support the Smart Energy Communities marketplace with a focus on energy efficiency (i.e., buildings & transportation), community energy planning, combined heat and power, district energy, and metrics, data & tools for energy planning. Primary responsibilities include the development, management and delivery of projects including applied research, advisory services, and the coordination of senior associates to implement QUEST initiatives.

Reporting to the Managing Director (Supervisor), the Director, Projects and Advisory Services will be expected to work and support all QUEST areas of practice to ensure the efficient delivery of projects, respond to the diverse needs of Caucuses and Working Groups, and maintain a high level of professionalism towards funders, volunteers, clients, Subscribers and partners.

Functions and Responsibilities
The Director, Projects and Advisory Services is expected to undertake the following:

Business Development

  • Contribute to the establishment and implementation of QUEST’s business plan, with a focus on project and advisory service objectives, with a clear matrix that includes revenue targets, milestones and deliverables. 
  • Identify, develop and implement projects including applied research, and associated funding opportunities to meet project and advisory service objectives established in the QUEST business plan.
  • Undertake to coordinate the delivery and support the marketing of advisory services, and monitor the project opportunities (pipeline). 
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with foundations, government agencies, sponsors, clients, and other funders to secure project funding and for advisory services.


  • Take an active role in the Senior Management Team (SMT) to ensure good management of the organization and an integrated team approach.
  • Responsible for ensuring that staff, volunteers, students, consultants and agencies under your direct responsibility are well managed and supervised. This includes the effective organization and assignment of work, and administration of agreements, contracts, memorandums of understanding, terms of reference and personnel policies.  
  • Develop, implement, and monitor operational processes and procedures to ensure attainment of yearly business plan revenue targets, milestones and deliverables for projects and advisory services, and ensure all internal and external reporting requirements are met promptly.

Relationship Management 

  • Serve as an ambassador for QUEST, building appropriate relationships for the positive benefit of the organization, attend conferences and events, and participate in external committees/bodies as directed.
  • Oversee the effective use and application of a customer relationship management system (CRM) for project coordination.
  • Support regional staff to develop and deliver project and advisory services including, proposal development, budget and workplan development.
  • Develop, maintain and coordinate QUEST’s Senior Associates to  implement QUEST initiatives. 

Financial & Administration

  • In conjunction with the SMT, be accountable for securing funds to operate on a yearly basis and implementing a sustainable revenue strategy for the long term.
  • Be responsible for managing assigned budgets.
  • Work closely with QUEST`s financial controller to monitor accounts payable and ensure the issuing of invoices and tracking of advisory services. 

Position Qualifications

  • Degree in business, urban planning, environmental studies, engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Proven record of developing and delivering major projects during your 5+ years of continuous applied work in research or consulting. 
  • Strong analytical skills, including knowledge in the modeling and analysis of data.
  • Demonstrated comfort and proven application of project management and reporting tools. 
  • Experience working in a CRM database (e.g. Salesforce) and with Google Suite an asset.
  • Demonstrated record of initiative, problem-solving, and adaptability, and ability to foster a collaborative, customer-oriented working environment.
  • Eligibility to work in Canada.
  • Bilingualism (French) an asset.
  • Domestic travel required. 

You will be comfortable working independently, have experience designing effective work-flow programs, and able to develop staff and assign major work responsibilities to multi-disciplinary teams. You will also be a strategic thinker and have the ability to delegate responsibility, listen carefully, build consensus and communicate and advocate effectively, be able and willing to share credit for successes, and encourage the integration of others’ ideas and proposals. 

This is a full-time position. Compensation is commensurate with experience and includes a comprehensive benefits package.
